At-Home IPL Hair Removal — How It Works

Stop shaving. Stop waxing. Start treating.

At-home IPL hair removal permanently reduces hair growth — the same result as a professional laser course, done at home, on your schedule, for a fraction of the cost.

Xsoul IPL devices start at $109.99. Each one includes 999,999 flashes — enough for hundreds of full-body sessions for life. Backed by a 3-year warranty — the longest in the category.

What is IPL hair removal?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. The device emits a broad-spectrum light pulse (470–1200nm) that targets melanin — the pigment in your hair. The light converts to heat inside the follicle, damaging it and disrupting future regrowth at the root.

It’s the same core technology professional laser clinics use. At-home IPL operates at a lower energy level, which is why multiple sessions are needed — but the outcome is the same: permanent hair reduction.

How long until you see results?

Sessions completed What you typically see
After 3–4 sessions Slower regrowth; some areas starting to thin
After 6–8 sessions Noticeable reduction in hair density (50–70%)
After 8–10 sessions 80–90% permanent reduction for compatible skin/hair types
Maintenance (monthly) Touch up any regrowth; results sustain long-term

Use 2–3 times per week. Full course takes 8–10 weeks. After that, one session per month is typically all you need.

IPL vs. waxing vs. laser: the real cost

Salon laser $1,200–$3,200 per area (one-time) Yes No
Xsoul IPL $109.99 one-time Yes — 80–90% reduction Yes

Does IPL work for your skin type?

IPL works by targeting melanin. That means it works best when there’s strong contrast between your hair color and skin tone: dark hair on fair to olive skin.

Skin tone (Fitzpatrick scale) Hair color IPL effectiveness
I–IV (fair to olive) Dark brown / black ✅ Best results
I–IV (fair to olive) Light brown ✅ Good results
I–IV (fair to olive) Light blonde / red / grey / white ❌ IPL not effective
V–VI (dark to very dark) Any ❌ Not suitable — risk of skin reaction

A skin tone and hair color compatibility chart is included with every Xsoul device. Check it before your first session.

How to use an at-home IPL device

  1. Shave the treatment area. Do not wax or epilate — shaving leaves the follicle intact so IPL can target it. Waxing removes the follicle entirely.
  2. Put on the included protective goggles before switching on the device.
  3. Plug in and power on. Start at Level 1 and increase gradually as your skin adapts.
  4. Hold at 90° to skin and press the flash button.
Auto Mode (continuous flash) — for large flat areas: legs, arms, back, stomach, chest.
Manual Mode (single pulse) — for smaller or curved areas: underarms, bikini line, upper lip, chin, fingers.
Not suitable for: eyebrows, around the eyes, tattooed skin, or very dark skin tones.
  5. Treat 2–3 times per week for the first 8 weeks, then move to weekly and eventually monthly maintenance.

Why multiple sessions?

Hair follicles cycle through four phases: active growth (Anagen), transition (Catagen), resting (Telogen), and shedding (Exogen). IPL is most effective during the Anagen phase, when the follicle is rich in melanin.

At any given session, only 20–30% of your follicles are in the Anagen phase. Multiple sessions 2–4 weeks apart catch each follicle as it cycles through its active window. That’s why 8–10 sessions — not one or two — delivers full results.

With 999,999 flashes in every Xsoul device, you have unlimited sessions for life. No refills, no replacement cartridges, no additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IPL hair removal work permanently?

For users with Fitzpatrick I–IV skin and dark hair, consistent IPL treatment delivers 80–90% permanent hair reduction after 8–10 sessions. Occasional maintenance sessions sustain results long-term. Results are permanent in the sense that treated follicles stop producing hair — but untreated follicles (and new hormonal changes) may require touch-ups over time.

Is IPL hair removal painful?

Xsoul IPL devices include ice cooling technology that maintains skin temperature at 50°F (10°C) during treatment. Most users describe it as virtually painless. The Sapphire model cools to 5°C (41°F) for even greater comfort. You can also start at a lower energy level and increase as your skin adapts.

How many IPL sessions do I need?

Most users see noticeable reduction after 3–4 sessions. Full results arrive after 8–10 sessions used 2–3 times per week. See our complete guide: How many IPL sessions do you actually need?

Can I use IPL on my face?

Yes — on the upper lip, chin, and cheeks. Use Manual Mode (single pulse) for precision. Do not use around the eyes or eyebrows. Facial skin is sensitive; start at Level 1 and increase slowly.

What’s the difference between IPL and laser?

Laser uses a single concentrated wavelength at clinical power — available only at clinics for $1,200–$3,200 per body area. IPL uses broad-spectrum light and is available at home from $109.99. Both produce permanent results. See our full comparison: IPL vs. laser hair removal.
